The Limousin Region
This beautiful and largely undiscovered region of France is known for its forests and lakes. Often known as the "Lake District" of France (but without the accompanying weather!). Many of the lakes have sandy beaches, pedalo's etc. and grassy picnic areas. Fishing and watersports are well catered for and it is always possible to find a quiet spot for a relaxing days picnic. There are four lakes within 20 minutes of our holiday cottage, including Lauriere (shown below) which is just 10 minutes away.

The region also caters well for those interested in walking, with literally hundreds of well marked walks though the hills and forests - some starting on the doorstep of our holiday cottages. Horse riding is extremely popular with many good pony trekking centres. Golf is well represented with a good selection of courses and visitors are always welcome.

Agriculture is centred around beef production, this is the birthplace of the world famous Limousin breed of cattle - raised naturally - it is simply unbeatable! The local mushrooms, chestnuts and walnuts find their way into almost every aspect of the excellent cuisine, and if deserts are your passion then look no further!

It is a region steeped in history and mythology, with charming chateaux, churches dating back to the XII century, breathtaking scenery, some of the most beaufiful in France and, importantly, a genuine warmth towards visitors. The mythology of the region extends to werewolves, sorcerers and saints which gives the place its magical quality. This is region where Richard the Lionheart met his fate at Chalus and you can still follow his route to the crusades.

Here you can visit many beautiful chateaux, museums and parks or spend time wandering around the beautiful old city of Limoges (30 minutes from our holiday cottages) with its towering cathedral and famous "Butchers Quarter", tour the porcelain museums and factories, or do some serious shopping in the largely pedestrian area of the city! If you don't want to drive then you can take the train from the charming little station of St. Sulpice Lauriere, just 10 minutes away from our holiday cottages.

There is so much that the region has to offer that we have our own site dedicated to the Limousin region, lakes, local restaurants, history, culture and attractions - you will also find some of the sites on the Limousin Links page are also in English and cover every aspect of life in this relatively unknown area of France.
